We welcome men and boys from 9 to 99 and if you would like to learn to sing in four part harmony in the acapella (unaccompanied) style we would like to hear from you. Often people think Barbershop is about blazers and straw boaters. Nothing could be further from the truth. Things have moved on and Barbershop is about friendship, performance and singing. Perhaps it’s time to consider joining a Barbershop Chorus. Why not join 5Ways? We will provide all the learning aids you will need. Some singing experience would be an advantage but there is no requirement to be able to read music! The Chorus currently meets every Thursday evening at the Banbury Twenty Cricket Club, Stroud Park, Ermont Way, OX16 4AE (just off Junction 11 of the M40 on the A422 ) from 7.30 until 10.00 pm. Younger boys may wish to leave rehearsals earlier (no problem!) However, the “older boys” might like to extend the session with an impromptu song at a local pub!
What will be expected of me?… The majority of us cannot read music, so we learn using teach CDs. When you decide that you want to join us you too will be given your own set of CDs or tapes. All we do ask is that you are committed to putting in some work in your spare time to learn the music from week to week.
What part do I sing?… When you come to your first rehearsal you are free to sit and watch, but you are invited to sing with us as a group. At some point during your first rehearsal, the Musical Director will go through some simple scales so that you, and we, know what type of voice you have. Don’t panic…this is not an audition and it happens away from the others.
What happens next?… When you have been with us for a few weeks and can sing some of the songs, you may ask to be assessed by the Musical Director to make sure you are singing the correct part, before being invited to join the chorus (again don’t panic, you will be part of a quartet and it is only for the MD). You will then be loaned a performance outfit (for which a small deposit is payable) and will be part of the 5ways Chorus.
Are there any drawbacks?… Well, as you can imagine, this all costs a bit of money, so we ask that you pay a monthly subscription of: £15.00 for adults or £7.50 for children & students. Barbershop can be very addictive… just ask anyone in the chorus.
If you like the sound of all this, talk to one of the chorus members—just look for someone in a white polo shirt.
